Vehicle Management: Vehicle Types, Tracking & More

Vehicle Management: Vehicle Types, Tracking & More

Vehicle tracking & management is one of the core functionalities of the FleetPaths software. In this guide, we will cover the many different options you have to manage your fleet, from simple activation/deactivation to Vehicle Types and how to utilize them.

1. The Vehicles Menu

We will first navigate to the Vehicles Menu.
  • Go to the Manage Tab from the top-left dropdown.
  • Select the Vehicles menu.

The Vehicles Menu is your one-stop page for all things vehicle management. Let's go over all of the information & functionalities present on this page, from left to right.
  1. Vehicle Name
    1. Shows all current Vehicle Names.
      1. If using Verizon Reveal, you can change your Vehicle Names in your Verizon Reveal portal (they will auto-populate into the FleetPaths portal).
      2. If using Vision, contact a FleetPaths Customer Service Specialist with your desired vehicle name(s) and it's corresponding Vision IMEI #(s).
  2. Vehicle Type
    1. Allows you to assign a created Vehicle Type to any vehicle. This will change its icon on the map and allow for easier at-a-glance distinguishing between different vehicles.
      1. We will cover how to create Vehicle Types later in this tutorial.
  3. Zone
    1. If activated for your portal, this will allow you to assign your vehicles to specific zones. This will make it so they will not appear as tracking anywhere outside of their assigned zones.
      1. This feature is inactive by default for every portal. If you'd like to activate the feature, contact a Customer Service Specialist.
  4. Salt & Vision Unit
    1. If you have a Vision unit connected to your salter for tracking salt spread info, these options allow you to assign salter types and Vision units to specific vehicles.
      1. This process is best handled by a FleetPaths Customer Service Specialist and is often a set-and-forget option.
      2. Note: Only applicable for Snow/StreetPaths customers.
  5. Last Update UTC
    1. Shows you the last date the vehicle was active (turned on/tracking).
  6. Active Checkbox
    1. This checkbox allows you to activate and deactivate vehicles. All active checked vehicles will appear in your portal, and all deactivated unchecked vehicles will be hidden until reactivated.
      1. This is not a delete button; this serves as a temporary way to remove vehicles from your portal (Ex. vehicles undergoing maintenance, out-of-season vehicles, etc.)
  7. Archive
    1. The far-right button is the Archive button, which is effectively your Delete button.
      1. If you know you will never be using a vehicle again (sold vehicle, etc.), use this button to permanently remove it from the Vehicles menu.

Now that you have the basics of the Vehicle Menu down, let's take a look at how to navigate and create Vehicle Types.

2. Creating Vehicle Types

The Vehicle Types functionality lets you create different classes of vehicle and make on-map identification that much easier. Let's make our way to the menu now.
  1. Go to the Manage Tab from the top-left dropdown.
  2. Select the Vehicle Types menu.

The Vehicle Types menu allows you to create, view, edit and delete vehicle types.
  1. Use the pencil on the right-hand side to edit previously created types, and the trash can next to the pencil to delete them.
Let's walk through the creation of a Vehicle Type now:
  1. Click the "Add Vehicle Type" button on the left-side of the page. A new menu will open with all of your options for editing your new Vehicle Type. Starting from the top:
  1. Name
    1. Enter the desired name of your new Vehicle Type here.
  2. Sensor One-Four
    1. If you have multiple sensors for multiple different types of vehicles (Ex. plow up & down sensors for snowplows and sweeper up & down sensors for street sweepers), you can assign them to specific vehicle types here.
  3. Portal
    1. Assign your new vehicle type to its associated portal.
      1. Note: Even if you only have one portal, you need to select it using the drop-down menu.
  4. Vehicle Icon
    1. Choose how you'd like your new vehicle type to appear on the map. Any vehicles assigned to this vehicle type will appear as the selected icon.
  5. Icon Color
    1. Select a color for your new vehicle type. Its previously selected icon will appear in this color on the map.
  1. Click "Add Vehicle Type" at the bottom right of the menu. This will save your new vehicle type. You will now be able to assign vehicles to this vehicle type in the Vehicles menu.

3. Vehicles on Map Page

Now that you've added your Vehicle Types and assigned your vehicles, let's take a look at the Map Page and see your changes in action.

Along with now being able to differentiate between your different vehicle types at a glance, you can hover over your vehicle icons for further information. From top to bottom:
  1. Vehicle Name
    1. Displays the selected vehicle's name.
  2. Last Updated Time
    1. Shows the date and time of the last active GPS tracking ping.
  3. Speed
    1. The speed of the vehicle at the most recent GPS ping.
  4. Sensors
    1. If you assigned sensors to the vehicle type, this area will display whether or not they are on or off at the most recent GPS ping, along with changing the color of the tracing line to indicate sensor activation.
You're now fully versed in vehicle management within FleetPaths software!
